Which divorce document do you have?

In Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet countries a divorce can be confirmed by different documents. We translate all of them — here is how to tell them apart.

Russian divorce certificate issued by ZAGS

Divorce certificate

Свидетельство о расторжении брака

A one-page certificate issued by the civil registry office (ZAGS). This is the document USCIS usually asks for.

Ukrainian court decision on divorce, personal data hidden

Court divorce decision

Решение суда о расторжении брака

If you divorced through a court, you may have the court decision — often several pages. Some offices ask for it together with the certificate.

Russian apostille attached to a divorce certificate, personal data hidden

Certificate with apostille

Свидетельство с апостилем

If your certificate has an apostille stamped on the back, we translate the apostille too — it is part of the document.

What's inside your translation

We have translated more than 700 divorce certificates since 2007. Here are two of them, with names, dates and numbers replaced. Here is what we pay attention to.

SAMPLE Sample English translation of a new Russian divorce certificate with QR code
Russian Federation divorce certificate, new form with a QR code — divorce by a court decision.
  1. Every field, even the empty ones

Blank fields are marked with “---”, so the officer can see nothing was skipped.

  2. The legal basis of the divorce

“By mutual consent of the spouses” or “a decision of the Justice of the Peace” — the basis is translated exactly, with the court and the date.

  3. Last names after the divorce

Many women return to their maiden name. We translate it precisely, because it must match your passport and Green Card.

  4. Renamed cities and regions

Leningrad, Voroshilovgrad, the Ukrainian SSR — we keep the name from the original and add a translator's note with today's name.

  5. Seals, QR codes and signatures

Everything that can't be typed is described in brackets: [Round stamp …], [QR Code], [Signed].

  6. Record number and certificate series

Long record numbers and series like “I-BO” or “II-ЕД (II-YeD)” are copied character by character and transliterated where needed.

PDF or paper original?

When you need a signed paper copy

A PDF is enough for online filings — USCIS online applications and NVC uploads. Order a signed, notarized paper copy if you will need your translation in one of these situations.

Immigrant visa interview at a U.S. consulate

You upload scans to the NVC, but at the interview you must show the documents themselves. Bring the paper translation together with your original certificate.

“Every visa applicant … must bring … the original or certified copy version of all civil documents submitted to NVC.”

USCIS interview (Green Card, citizenship)

Photocopies are fine when you file, but the officer may ask to see the originals. Bring the signed paper translation to your interview.

“USCIS may, at any time, request submission of an original document for review.”

Courts

Requirements vary by court. Many courts ask for a signed original translation, sometimes with a notarized translator's affidavit. Check with the clerk before you file — we can prepare either.

DMV and REAL ID

Your documents are checked in the original, so bring a paper translation too. Rules differ from state to state.

Who translates your documents

Qualified linguists, not a translation app

Since 2007 we have translated more than 12,000 Russian and Ukrainian documents — over 30,000 pages — and not one of our translations has ever been rejected by USCIS.

Never rejected by USCIS

Every translation comes with a signed certificate of accuracy that meets USCIS translation requirements.

Court-certified interpreters

Our team includes California court-certified interpreters and Washington State certified translators.

Degreed linguists

Every translator holds a university degree in linguistics or foreign-language teaching.

Notarized at no extra cost

Accepted by USCIS, NVC, WES, ECE, U.S. courts, SSA, DMV, schools and employers.

Do I need an ATA-certified translator? No. USCIS, the NVC, WES, ECE and U.S. courts do not require ATA certification for document translations. They require a complete, accurate English translation with a signed statement that the translator is competent to translate — which is exactly what we provide.

When you need it

Why a divorce certificate matters in the U.S.

Whenever you apply for an immigration benefit based on marriage — or for citizenship — USCIS asks for proof that every previous marriage has legally ended, for you and for your spouse. A foreign divorce certificate is that proof, and it must come with a full English translation.

  • Green Card through marriage — Forms I-130 and I-485, immigrant visas through the NVC
  • Fiancé(e) visa — K-1 petitions and the consular interview
  • Citizenship — Form N-400 asks about all prior marriages
  • Getting married in the U.S. — county clerks ask for proof that a previous marriage ended
  • Name change — returning to your maiden name with SSA, DMV and banks

FAQ

Divorce certificate translation questions

Will USCIS accept your translation?

Yes — and none of our translations has ever been rejected by USCIS. Each translation comes with a signed certificate stating that it is complete and accurate and that the translator is competent to translate from Russian (or Ukrainian) into English. We also notarize it at no extra charge.

I only have the court decision, not a certificate. Is that enough?

It depends on where you submit it. In Russia, a divorce granted by a court is normally registered afterwards at ZAGS, which issues the divorce certificate. If you only have the court decision, send it to us — we'll translate it and tell you whether it's worth requesting the certificate as well.

My divorce certificate is Soviet. Is it still valid?

Yes. Divorce certificates issued in the USSR remain valid. We translate them regularly and add a translator's note when a city or region has since been renamed.

The certificate was issued to my ex-spouse. Can I still use it?

Each spouse can request their own copy. If you only have the certificate issued to your former spouse, send it anyway — it shows the same divorce record, and we'll translate it as it is.

I lost my divorce certificate. What can I do?

You can request a duplicate certificate or an archival statement from the ZAGS office where the divorce was registered. We translate both — and we can help you get documents from Russia.

Do I need an apostille?

For USCIS and most U.S. agencies — no, a certified translation is enough. If your certificate already has an apostille, we translate it together with the document.

Do I need an ATA-certified translator?

No. USCIS, the NVC, WES, ECE and U.S. courts do not require ATA certification. They require a complete and accurate translation with a signed translator's certification — which every translation from us includes.
